November Playlist

November 15, 2009

Sharing music is one of my favourite things, so I thought a nice way to start my forays into the world of blogging would be to do a Spotify playlist. This is something I’d like to try and do fairly regularly. They’ll all be loosely based around a theme/ genre, and will be kept reasonably short so I don’t overwhelm you.

I gave myself a few limitations this time – I wanted to use largely instrumental tracks that are both uplifting and beautiful, and they also needed to fit under the umbrella of electronic music. Listen here:

T&SMix2

1. Obfusc:  Oceanic Glow – This is band are one of our label mates over at Static Caravan, and this came out sooner after we released Summer Solstice. This is my favourite track from a truly excellent 7″.

2. Ulrich Schnauss: Crazy for You  – Ulrich is an old favourite, and one of the first artists in this kind of genre that I got in to. He’s a big fan of Shoegaze, and I love the influence it has in his music.

3. Boards of Canada: Dayvan Cowboy – This is a regular feature in my playlists and is one of my all time favourite pieces of music – it’s pretty much perfect. Many people think that they went off the boil with this album but in my view it’s their best, especially this track.

4. Koushik: Lying in the Sun – Not instrumental, but I thought this deserved to be included. I didn’t know what to expect when I got this record, but was very pleasantly surprised when I put it in my CD player.  It’s full of chilled out electronica like this.

5. Four Tet: Unspoken – Rounds is one of my favourite records. It’s all so considered – the drum sound is perfect, and the piano line is amazing.

6. Aphex Twin: Jynweythek Ylow – Sadly, Spotify didn’t have Film,  my favourite Aphex track, so I put this one on instead. Still, a great piece of music.

7. Lemon Jelly:  Space Walk – Summery music at its best. I’d never really listened to Lemon Jelly until someone compared Stepping Stones to this track, but I’m glad I did. I love the break down at 4 mins.

8. The Go! Team: Everyone’s a VIP to someone. This is another band that I only listened to after someone pointed out a similarity. Great Banjo and great strings.

There you go, enjoy! If you have any recommendations, or perhaps some suggestions for future playlist themes, then let me know. I’d like to hear them. Oh also, you can have some more ear treats by going here to listen to our BBC Radio 1 session for Bethan Elfyn:
